Welcome to the Nutrition elective
Description
This elective is focused on pediatric and adult nutrition, focusing on abnormal weight gain, diabetes, inpatient nutrition, swallowing disorders, breastfeeding and community nutrition. The resident will have a wide range of potential experiences, depending upon their area of focus and interest. Judy has volunteered to provide assistance in scheduling the experience. Please review the options for the rotations and provide Judy a rank list of exposures you are interested in.
This elective can be structured as a 1 or 2-week block or longitudinal experience.

Goals
To improve the nutritional knowledge of residents as they care for patients across the life-span and in various settings
Objectives (from AAFP Guidelines for Nutrition Education – see complete document)
Understand general principles of nutrition, including its role in the prevention and management of specific diseases, and be able to translate these principles into a plan of care for the patient. (Patient Care, Medical Knowledge)
Be able to perform a comprehensive nutritional assessment including:
Medical, social and diet histories
Physical examination
Anthropometrics (height, weight, body mass index [BMI], head circumference and body-fat distribution [waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratios])
Laboratory tests (Patient Care, Medical Knowledge)
Be able to counsel patients regarding nutritional recommendations in a culturally sensitive manner. (Professionalism, Interpersonal and Communication Skills)
Use an evidence-based approach to assess the patient’s nutritional status and determine the effectiveness of interventions. (Practice-based Learning, Improvement)
Recognize patients who are at high risk for nutrition-related complications and refer them to nutrition consultants who can provide counseling and education. (Patient Care, Medical Knowledge and Systems-based Practice)
