Welcome to the Wound Care Elective
Description
This elective will allow the resident to better understand how to manage simple and complicated wounds and to understand when to refer to other specialists. The elective will includes opportunities on the inpatient and outpatient care of wounds, opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams, and the opportunity to work in a variety of settings. The elective can be 1 to 2 week block or longitudinal (not longer than 6 mo).

During the rotation, please complete the NDNQI Pressure Injury Training (Option 2). The training will provide you extensive knowledge on pressure sores and treatment. If you wish, you can complete Option 1 through the elective, although not necessary or required.

Elective Duration: 2- 4 wk
Guidelines for FMC
R1: 1 half day of FMC time (can do more) and Thurs PM conferences
R2: 3 half days of FMC time and Thurs PM conferences
R3: 4 half days of FMC time and Thurs PM conferences
Goals and Objectives
Describe methods to prevent and effectively treat pressure ulcers in the inpatient, outpatient and nursing home setting.
Describe methods to prevent and effectively treat diabetic ulcers in the inpatient, outpatient and nursing home setting.
Be familiar with burn care in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
Evaluate, manage and prevent venous ulcers.
Be familiar with the resources available when taking care of a wound patient such as home health teams, hospital wound nurses, and surgical specialist.
