Welcome to the Radiology Curriculum

Welcome to Radiology!!  A good family physician requires a basic set of radiology skills regardless of his or her practice environment and resources. The radiology curriculum is designed to guide you in developing key skills as well as to provide you with resources for further learning if desired. The curriculum is meant to be a longitudinal experience starting in your first year of residency with continued learning throughout the rest of your residency and beyond! You will hopefully enjoy progressing through the curriculum and advancing to each next step. Feel free to return to earlier steps at any point to refresh and solidify your knowledge.

The curriculum is divided into levels that correspond with specific rotations. To complete each level, you will need to complete the online modules and other components detailed in that section. Please complete them as many times as necessary to feel comfortable with each specific skill. Your knowledge gained will be assessed at the completion of each level. Details of the assessment methods (oral exam, post-test, etc) are detailed below in each individual section.

Level I: Intro to Family Medicine Month

During your Introduction to Family Medicine month you will have two independent study assignments. The first will help you learn how to interpret a plain chest x-ray in a standard way. You will use the link below to go through the online module. It should take approximately 1-2 hours depending on whether you want to take notes. After you complete the module you will schedule an oral exam with the radiology contact person (usually Dr. Mount). There is a link for a practice test below. The second assignment is a self-study powerpoint going through case scenarios to aid in selecting the appropriate imaging test for different patient diagnoses. You should take the pre-test (link below) before reviewing the cases then take the post-test (link below) after you review the cases to see if you improve. There is also a link to the American College of Radiology website where you find tables for the appropriate test to order for more diagnoses. Both components are required to be completed before the end of your Intro month. Enjoy!

Level II: October Month

During your November month, you will have multiple additional training experiences. The radiology component of this month will consist of interactive lecture time and self-study. You will review your standardized approach to interpreting a CXR and have opportunity to practice this skill. You will also review the cases to help solidify your knowledge of appropriate imaging in these scenarios. The final component will be a self-study module introducing an approach to reading an abdominal plain film along with an interactive lecture time to practice this skill and apply it to determining placement of lines and tubes. Let the fun begin!

Step 1: Prior to the CXR lecture please review your standardized approach to reading a CXR. Revisit the self-study module if needed.

Step 2: Review the cases in Level I and take the pre-test prior to the lecture session.

Step 3: Prior to the AXR lecture session take 1-2 hours to do the online self-study module to learn how to interpret an abdominal film.

Level III: Surgery

The radiology component of your surgery rotation will focus on the abdominal plain film as well as 5 cases that highlight the appropriate imaging tests needed in these cases. You will have a pre-test prior to the cases and a post-test afterwards. The abdominal film module will help prepare you for an oral exam (5 films plus 2 bonus) with Dr. Rich that will be scheduled during the month. A practice test is available below.

1. Complete the abdominal plain film self-study module
2. Practice test for abdominal x-ray oral exam
3. Surgery cases: Pre-test
4. Cases: Ordering the appropriate test
5. Surgery cases: Post-test

Level IV: Ortho Rotation

The radiology component of the urgent care rotation focuses on plain x-rays of major joints: knee, ankle, shoulder, and hip. The second component will highlight the most common fractures. By the end of the block you should feel comfortable interpreting a knee, ankle, shoulder and hip x-ray. You will also be able to identify the most common fractures on x-ray and identify the proper management of those fractures.

Resources

1. Lieberman's Primary Care Radiology: Excellent tutorial on indications, contraindications of basic radiology tests including link to patient instructions for these tests (Menu of Radiologic Tests). Also has mult videos with cases for imaging evaluation of common complaints (low back pain, etc).

2. Radquiz.com: Links to multiple other sites and Google images. MedPix(R) cases fun if you have downtime.

3. American College of Radiology (ACR) website link to Appropriateness Criteria: More than 180 topics covered in detail.

4. Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Radiology: Phenomenal image gallery of common and rare pediatric cases.

5. Yottalook: Free medical imaging search engine. Good quick imaging search engine and includes case stem.

6. LearnRadiology.com: Great site with brief lectures (3-5min) and also great imaging section with thumbnails and one word diagnoses. Recommend images - Bones section.

7. Chest x-ray site: Good review on cross-sectional anatomy.

8. Indiana University School of Medicine site: 11 cases that are interactive and fun. Recommend Cases 3 and 5.

9. Amiga Radiologist Home page: Click on Access Unknowns for quick cases and quizzes. Downside is that cases somewhat rare.
