Welcome to the Adult Emergency Medicine R1 Rotation

Greetings! The Emergency Medicine curriculum spans multiple rotations, with the 2 week blocks at UC Medical Center (R1) and TCH (R3) each providing focused learning on adult emergency and urgent care to acutely ill adults.

R1 UCMC ER:

  • During the R1 UCMC rotation you will evaluate and begin treatment for patients presenting to the B Pod at the ED of UCMC. All patients will be directly supervised by a fourth year UC Emergency Medicine resident.  Additionally, you may have opportunity to work at the UC Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) department.  At the start of the rotation be sure to review the Emergency Medicine Curriculum.

  • ER SCHEDULE:  FM residents are typically scheduled for around 8 11-hour sessions in their 2 week rotation. An additional PES session may be scheduled with Dr Pulliam. Your schedule should also include a 4-hour portion of Emergency Medicine POCUS (Ultrasound) training with Dr Lori Stolz’s team. No vacation is allowed during this 2-week block. If you have a concern about the number of your shifts, please contact Doug Collins, faculty oversight (contact info below).

  • ER DIDACTICS:  The ER rotation also includes didactic learning opportunities.  On Friday mornings is a conference led by the UC EM program covering core topics in Emergency Medicine.  On all mornings at 730, except on Wednesdays, residents are encouraged to attend the morning report case study teaching in the ER.  Additionally, if you have a Wednesday off, you are invited to attend UC EM grand rounds on Wednesday mornings 8a-1p in MSB 1554 just upstairs from the ER, by Starbucks; however, these Wednesday sessions are specifically for ER residents and off-service residents typically need to cover B-Pod in this slot.  Capitalize on didactics as able, but remember that resting on days off is first priority and duties hours must be strictly adhered to.

R3+ TCH ER:

  • The TCH ER block is focused on Adult Emergency Medicine in a community hospital, with more focus on fast-track/urgent care. See the Adult Emergency Medicine - TCH R3+ page HERE for more information.

READING/ABFM QUIZZES:

  • The ER block is typically ranked high by residents for the experience and learning. The block is pretty full, and we don’t want to add to your burden; we do, however, want to help you get the most out of your month.  With that in mind, there are a few main topics we encourage residents to focus in on through reading, because this may be the best block in your residency to get exposure to these areas (although inpatient medicine, pediatric rotations, and electives may also bring these cases your way).

  • Please read the articles below during your block (Also, remember that the inpatient website has additional articles that relate to many emergency cases.)  A Self-Evaluation Quiz based on previous ABFM ITE questions is also provided for those who find it helpful, but it is not required (Answers available via email - see below).

FACULTY OVERSIGHT:

  • Contact your faculty oversight for the rotation, available for quiz answers, questions or feedback you may have, or to help with anything else in your rotation (scheduling conflicts, interpersonal difficulties, etc).
