Overview

Global Health Foundations & Field Experience Rotation (R1)

The R1 GH Foundations & Field Experience Rotation is designed for all R1s, consisting of a longitudinal GH Course during the R1 year plus a 2 week GH Field Experience (international group experience, often with residents and other UC and non-UC participants, in November, February, April, or July).  All residents are required to participate in the R1 GH Course and complete required modules and live sessions prior to any Field Experience.  The Field Experience is typically the arranged, fully-paid* group GH Field Experience in Guatemala in partnership with Wuqu Kawoq; Residents with special interests may be given permission to exchange the GH Field Experience in Guatemala for an alternate approved Global & Underserved Health trip/experience.  See the Global Health page for more details.

Global Health Field Experience & Selective Rotation (R2)

R2s are required, unless special exception is approved, to participate as Team Leaders for the GH Field Experience in Guatemala (2 weeks).  R2 Team Leaders work with Dr. O’Dea to help prepare for this leadership experience.

Global & Underserved Health Senior Experience (R3/R5)

Senior residents (Third year FM and fifth year for FM/Psych) are additionally required to complete a 2 (or 4) week experience in Global and Underserved Health. Residents can select from predesigned experiences or elect to create their own Global Health, Health Policy, or Underserved experience. A $2000 stipend is available for all approved experiences*.  The resident is responsible to make appropriate arrangements for the rotation, but the Global Health Team faculty, Dr. O'Dea (International), and Dr. Kiesler (Domestic Underserved and Health Policy)) are available to provide guidance and must provide approval.  All experiences must be approved by the GH Team faculty by July 1 (preferred) and no later than 90 days prior to the experience.  All senior residents participating in a non-Guatemala/WK experience for which a stipend is awarded are required to complete a Senior Experience Project (for information, follow the link at the end of this section) as well.

With approval from Dr. Rich, R3/R5 residents may elect to opt out of the GUH Senior Experience and choose an Elective outside of Global & Underserved Health.  Approval will be on a case by case basis.

See the Global & Underserved Health Senior Experience page (under Electives) for more details, including a listing of recommended and potentially available opportunities:  /global-health-elective/

Global & Underserved Health Elective

In addition to the above rotations, some residents may choose to participate in an additional GUH Elective.  A stipend is not available for additional electives.  See /global-health-elective/ for more details.
