Welcome to the Hospice and Palliative Care Elective
Description
During the Hospice and Palliative Elective, the residents will be introduced to hospice and palliative care in multiple settings, gaining better understanding of hospice care and palliative care. The residents will rotate on the palliative care service at The Christ Hospital and have the opportunity for additional experiences in providing home hospice care observing interdisciplinary hospice team meetings. This is an outstanding opportunity for all residents.
This elective is only available as a two-week block. If interested, please submit a request form. We can only accommodate one resident on the elective at any given time.
Upper levels interested in the Palliative Care Fellowship, it is strong recommended to rotate in the fall.

Schedule
This elective can be completed in 2 or 4 weeks. Depending on family medicine center patient responsibilities and family practice on-call duties during the elective, we will arrange a combination of the following activities for between 3-6 half days per week:
Observe one interdisciplinary hospice team meeting (Tuesday afternoons)
Participate in Thursday noon interdisciplinary team meetings for the Christ Hospital Palliative Care Consult Team (Thursdays noon-1)
Shadow Dr. Smucker or Dr. Hartmann for 1-2 half days of hospice visits, combination of home visits and hospice patients in nursing homes
Participate as a member of the TCH Palliative Care Consult Team during patient care hours (M-F, 8:30-5). This activity will likely occupy the largest number of half days during the elective.

We can only accommodate one resident on the elective at any given time. Please contact Dr. Hartmann if you would like to consider scheduling the elective for a particular month.
