2x2 Independent Learning / Module Sessions

In order to protect time for residents to complete multiple online learning modules that exist in some of our program’s longitudinal curricula (eg, R1 Global Health, POCUS, others) and rotations (Inpatient quizzes, Maternity Care canvas modules, others), a 4-hour session is blocked every 4 weeks (during the FMC 2-week block) titled “Independent Learning / Modules”.  This session is reserved for residents to work on assigned quizzes and modules.  Residents should use the time accordingly, and avoid the temptation of using the session for FMC inbasket management or other activities.

Here is a list of the various modules and other assignments (readings, quizzes, etc) you are asked to work on during your 4-hour sessions:

  1. Cardiology (See rotation page here: https://tchucfm2.squarespace.com/cardiology; Oversight: Dr Bernheisel)

    1. Complete your Cardiology KSA

    2. Complete your Heart Failure and TVAR readings

    3. Complete your Cardiology POCUS modules

    4. Schedule your EKG meetings with Dr Bernheisel

  2. Maternity Care (See rotation page here: https://tchucfm2.squarespace.com/maternity-care; Oversight: Dr Lazaron)

    1. Complete your on-line Canvas course (See “CANVAS” link on rotation page) - these are due at the end of your rotation, but previous residents advise getting a head start

  3. Inpatient (See rotation page: https://tchucfm2.squarespace.com/welcomeinpt; Oversight: Dr Mount)

    1. Complete your R1 required quizzes (See “QUIZZES” link on rotation page) - great idea to get some of these done before your first inpatient rotation as your schedule allows

  4. POCUS (See rotation page here: https://tchucfm2.squarespace.com/ultrasoundpocus-rotation; Oversight: Dr Collins)

    1. Complete your Intro to POCUS module (Module 1)

    2. Complete your Cardiology POCUS modules (Modules 7 & 8)

    3. Complete additional modules as time allows (Other rotations/sessions should have time to complete these, but getting ahead can be helpful)

  5. Global Health R1 Foundations (See rotation page here: https://tchucfm2.squarespace.com/global-health-course; Oversight: Dr Collins)  Sessions are scheduled on 2nd Thursdays, but modules are required to be completed if those sessions are missed due to other rotations.  Additionally, some 2nd Thursday sessions may require some pre-work.  Here are readings/activities that are either recommended or required throughout the year

    1. Introduction to Global Health - read Mountains Beyond Mountains excerpts (optional)

    2. Development in Global Health - read Walking with the Poor excerpt summarizing important voices in modern development (optional)

    3. Orientation to Guatemala - read “Orientation to Guatemala” (an excellent but long article)(required)

    4. Guatemala Culture Book Study - read selections from I, Rigoberta Menchu (optional)

    5. Read Enrique’s Journey - Your R1 trip will involve a discussion of this book.  It is considered required reading and many trip participants read it during the trip.  See description under “Course Synthesis Activities” section (after the modules).  Please purchase your own copy of Enrique’s Journey.

Please contact the faculty oversight for the assignment and/or modules if you have any questions.
