Welcome to the Create Your Own Electives

Description

A resident may have an educational need or desired experience that is unique for that resident which can not be met utilizing the pre-designed electives available. The program allows flexibility to create your own elective to meet this need as long as certain guidelines are followed.

Electives which may fall into the "Create Your Own" option include:

  1. Rotations in other sites in the US: e.g., rural practice, Indian Health Service, OB rotations in North Dakota. These rotations need to be approved by Dr. Rich first. There is a lot of paper work so please submit this request 6 months in advance.

  2. Global and Underserved Health Elective: Residents who would like to participate in additional Global Health experiences, may utilize one of their electives for this purpose. The Global and Underserved Health Elective is an additional opportunity as the Global and Underserved Senior Experience. Funding is available for the required senior experience but may not be available for an additional elective.

  3. Any specialty rotation not yet developed or led by faculty. The resident may wish to discuss with faculty advisor first to get ideas, or talk with the specialist faculty to explore the possible working arrangements and learning objectives.

  4. Scholarship electives. So called. “Reading Electives” & “Research Electives.” These electives are being revised, and require a specific project to be completed by the end of the rotation—some deliverable that is produced, such as a resident presentation, a practice tool, a poster, a paper for submission.

  5. The resident is responsible for developing and creating the elective: Although we are happy to assist the resident along the way, it is the responsibility of the resident to do much of the leg work.

  6. If you choose to rotate outside of The Christ Hospital there MUST be an active PLA in place. Please see the list of active PLAs below:

Beacon Orthopedics, Brightview, Cincinnati Health Department, Cincinnati Health Network, Crossroads Health Network, Maple Knoll, UC Newborn, Equitas Health,UC Addiction Medicine, UC-Burnet Family Med, UC-West Chester Family Med, UC-Wyoming Family Med, UHS, Cincinnati VA, Chenmed, CCHMC Emergency, CCHMC Palliative and Hospice Care, Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health, Wuqu Kawoq *There is a learning agreement with the IHS-Navajo Area Indian Health Service.
