OVERVIEW

Welcome to the Global Health Course!  A variation of this course has been offered for UC students and residents since 1994.

The Global Health Course is offered five times a year, tailored to our varied learners. A longitudinal R1 course is designed for our TCH/UC residents to prepare them for their GH Field Experience later in the year. The Jul/Nov/Feb/Apr courses are designed for our UC COM medical student and UC pharmacy student rotations, and integrated with our UC Family Medicine Guatemala Field (or Telehealth) Experiences.  The course is also offered to UC nursing and other allied health professions students and non-UC students participating in the integrated Guatemala Field Experience.  For more information on the Course, contact Dr. Rosado, or, for questions related to the Guatemala Field Experience, contact Dr. O'Dea (odeacj@ucmail.uc.edu) or visit the GH Field Experience page.

Most course topics are now designed as independent learning modules (below).  Live sessions, including the Course Orientation, take place at The Christ Hospital/University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency offices located at The Christ Hospital Medical Office Building (Suite 340 Residency Office conference room or lounge, Suite 235 FMC conference room), or at The Christ Hospital (The Christ Hospital Nippert Education Center, Hospital A-level, near the cafeteria, or Joint & Spine Center conference rooms).  See the Syllabus, Objectives, and Schedule specific to your rotation through the links above for guidance on required modules and the location of live sessions for your rotation.

COURSE SYNTHESIS ACTIVITIES

Course participants may be required to complete a few course and field experience related synthesis activities. Please see your Course Syllabus to see if these activities have been assigned to you:

  • Enrique’s Journey Book Discussion: Course participants may be required to read Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, in preparation for the scheduled discussion following the trip.  As you read, be ready to share a passage that you found particularly interesting, helpful, or impacting.  It is anticipated that participants will utilize trip travel and evening time to complete this reading assignment.  This book is chosen in part to help learners recognize how the healthcare and context of the Guatemala Field Experience applies to domestic U.S. care. Books may be available for check-out (borrowed) from our GH library.  Please return any borrowed books before the end of the course.  Failure to return your book will result in an incomplete course grade.

  • Photovoice Project: Each trip, our participants are asked to reflect upon their experience and share a photo with us.  Here are examples of Photovoice Projects from previous participants.

  • UC International Presentation: Field experience costs are lowered due to a substantial financial contribution from UC International, with the requirement that students participating in an international activity as part of their UC course share-out their experience afterward. For our Global Health Course, we will work with UC International to schedule a group presentation luncheon, for students to present to other UC students, that serves as a helpful synthesis activity. Please see your schedule or contact the Course Director to find out when your presentation is scheduled. Please follow this suggested outline for your group presentation:

    • First, begin with a short overview of the rotation:  what your time looked like, a brief overview of the course (5 min)

    • Second, provide a short overview of the organization, Wuqu Kawoq (5 min)

    • Third, summarize your time in Guatemala—what did you do? (5 min)

    • Fourth, choose a case and a specific topic related to global health to review with the students.  This might be an infectious disease, a chronic disease, or another issue such as an ethical issue, family planning or malnutrition.  Review the case and then how you managed the case, and review the literature on this area. (10 min)

    • Finally, leave some time for Q&A as you wrap up (5 min)
