Our Mission:  To inspire and train family physicians to lead and serve in healthcare for vulnerable populations in Cincinnati and around the world.

The Global & Underserved Health Residency Curriculum is overseen by the Global Health Resident Committee and UCDFCM Division of Urban, Underserved, and Global Health Division’s core residency faculty (Drs. Christy O'Dea and Joe Kiesler), as well as additional UUGH faculty.  We always welcome your input and ideas.

We view Global Health as the care of vulnerable populations, wherever they may live.  Our curriculum is structured around 6 competency goals that define the "Global Physician," adaptable to lead and serve in healthcare anywhere:

  1. Describe and address the determinants of health as a foundation in global and underserved health.

  2. Interpret health in the context of the principles of community and population health, from local to global levels.

  3. Provide high quality clinical care in low resources settings and for vulnerable populations

  4. Demonstrate effective communication and cultural humility in patient, team, and community relationships

  5. Advocate effectively on an individual, local, and national level within the context of global health ethics.

  6. Apply the attitudes and skills of sustainable servant-leadership in multiple healthcare settings including interdisciplinary teams.

Our curriculum utilizes a variety of methods, including:  our biannual Global & Underserved Health Course, engaging longitudinal Thursday conferences and workshops, journal clubs and book discussions, scholarship and community service opportunities, and a variety of elective rotations ranging from domestic policy and advocacy to clinical care in the US, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.  Click here to view our Global Health Curriculum Table.

The Global and Underserved Health curriculum is a fundamental part of the TCH/UC family medicine residency, and the program has a long history of community engagement in our own local community and abroad. All TCH/UC residents are highly encouraged to participate in the Guatemala field experiences at least twice, and preferably, thrice over the course of their residency experiences.  Our strong partnership with Maya Health Alliance in Guatemala depends on resident participation to fulfill our obligations.  Please review the TCH/UC Family Medicine Residency Program policy on participation in Global and Underserved Health curriculum for details related to the field experiences

To ensure appropriate coverage of various Global & Underserved Health topics for all residents, we follow a 3-year cycle in our curriculum.  Click here to view our 3-year cycle

The Global Health Calendar

Each academic year in Global Health features a variety of opportunities.  In addition to our October R1 and April Global Health Courses and quarterly Trips, activities include our monthly Thursday Conferences, biannual Book Discussion Nights, and annual Movie Night.  We're also active in scholarship, with faculty and residents often participating in the STFM Conference, AAFP Global Health Workshop, CUGH Conference, Global Missions Health Conference, and APHA Annual Meeting. Click here for our Year-At-A-Glance Calendar.
